Kathy & Pat in Denali National Park , Alaska

Husband and Wife team, Alaskan artist/athlete Kathy Sarns and Cyclist Pat Irwin started their business with a bike shop/art gallery.. THEN.. With Pat's encouragement Kathy designed their first ALASKA GOLD RUSH cycling jersey, using Kathy's own original Gold Rush License plate design (that she created and which won the 1998 Best Plate in the United States Award) ! Yes, Kathy is the artist that designed the © Alaska Gold Rush License Plate. This was the beginning of a new creative cycling wear venture called Free Spirit! Click here to see their FREE SPIRIT WEAR! Kathy specializes in intaglio printmaking, and graphic design and now she creates the best looking active clothing ever ! Her bright images are products of a vivid imagination inspired by a unique and adventurous life in Alaska with her husband Pat and 2 dogs. Pat grew up in Tennessee and came to Alaska to race 350 miles on the frozen Iditarod trail on his single speed bike. After returning to win the race, he decided to stay and marry Kathy Sarns, the owner of the extreme racer's B & B where he stayed. He rides his bike year round and is the guy who came up with the "Quitter 200" for the Fireweed race and the 2 day 300k -an overnight version for the Fireweed400 race! Kathy Sarns has lived in Alaska since 1982. She drove from Bass Harbor, Maine in a yellow VW Bug to work in a fish cannery and stayed, well ...because the bug broke down. The fish business was not for her, and she followed her talents as an artist. She is now a a successful independent artist and designer. An avid nordic skier, Kathy has also been a Junior Nordic ski coach for Alaska's children since 1984. Kathy was the first woman to complete the 200+ mile Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classic (Hope to Homer). She later went on to complete 2 more Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classics races: Nebesna to McCarthy race AND the Brooks Range race - that ended in Wiseman via Ernie Pass and North Fork of the Koyukuk. After using up a few of her lives tumbling down rivers, and other close encounters, in a wilderness that for her is too big and powerful and beautiful to be rushing through...she has figured out now that she can pack light with all essentials , be safe, and have more fun on their own planned trips. Pat & Kathy continue expanding Free Spirit Wear clothing line to more states and more styles. Whenever possible they fit in some adventure in Alaska to remind themselves why they live here.
